There are many benefits of having wall-to-wall carpeting in your home or office. Also known as broadloom, carpet stretched from wall to wall helps reduce noise, conserve energy and add warmth. Yet like any material, it requires proper care – especially in highly trafficked areas, where dirt, dust and stains can build up over time. Carpeting that’s not kept clean may also aggravate allergies.

To maintain the appearance of wall-to-wall carpeting, get started with the following tips.

Keep Your Doormats Clean

Whether your entryway has tile or hardwood flooring, you’ve likely put a doormat down for people to wipe dirt from their shoes. Doormats catch dust and other particles before they can be tracked through your home or office.

Make sure to clean your doormats regularly – about every two weeks or more often, depending on the amount of traffic they see.

Remember to Take Off Your Shoes

Your shoes touch a variety of surfaces throughout the day, from the sidewalk to your car and public floors. During these journeys, the material becomes a magnet for dirt, allergens and microorganisms. Once you arrive home, you risk transferring these particles to your carpet if you don’t change shoes.

Take them off by the door and put on a pair of slippers or house shoes. When you have guests over, ask them to remove their shoes at the entryway as well.

Vacuum Wall-to-Wall Carpeting

Wall-to-wall carpeting should be vacuumed at least once a week. Move any furniture and go over the full surface at least twice, emptying the contents of the vacuum bag after each use. Vacuum cleaners with internal filtration systems can prevent the spread of dust and dirt.

Cleaning Wall-to-Wall Carpeting

Along with tracking in less dirt and vacuuming regularly, you can maintain the appearance of wall-to-wall carpeting with:

  • Protective Materials: If you’re concerned about wear and tear showing too quickly, consider leg coasters for furniture and placing an area rug down where people walk.
  • Clean Up Spills: Allowing a spill to dry will require more effort to clean. Address any messes immediately, using a towel with water and detergent or club soda. To reduce risks for spills and dropped crumbs, avoid eating near the carpet.
  • Odor Control: Avoid air fresheners or sprays, as these often just mask odors. Instead, sprinkle baking soda onto the material and let it sit for a few hours before vacuuming. How often you do this will depend on your lifestyle but get in the habit of once a month. If you have pets, you’ll need to deodorize the material more regularly.
  • More Intensive Care: Vacuuming can only go so far, where dirt and odors are concerned. For a more thorough job, shampoo the carpet at least once a year or schedule a professional cleaning.
